Ganike soppu is called garden nightshade in English, kaki soppu or Kashi soppu in Kannada, manathakkali keerai in Tamil, makoy in Hindi and its scientific name is Solanum nigrum. Kashi soppu is also called kaka machi, rasayani in Sanskrit.
It is found in Africa, Europe and Asian countries. It is found all over India and it grows as a weed in fields and farms. The plant is a perennial shrub and grows from 1-3 feet in height. Its leaves are used as a leaf vegetable and used in cooking. Leaves, fruits, roots and seeds are used in home remedies.
It is mentioned in Ayurveda that the ganike plant is a highly nutritious plant and it is used to cure many ailments in Ayurvedic medicine.
There are two types of ganike plants variety based on the colour of the fruit. One variety has red colour fruit and another variety has black colour fruit. Among them, the black variety is the most nutritious and medicinal properties.
Ganike soppu and its fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals. It consists of calcium, zinc, magnesium, iron, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, and vitamin A, B and C.
Garden nightshade plant fruits are green and turn black when ripens. The fruits grow in bunches. It somewhat tastes sweet and sour and it consists of small seeds in it. Children love to eat these tasty fruits whenever they see the plant with fruits in and around the country yard of their house.

Ingredients needed
Ganike leaves/soppu 250 gm
Garlic cloves 5-6
Onion 1
Ghee 2 tsp
Red chilli 1-2
Copra grated 100 gm
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Curd or buttermilk 1 cup
Salt as per taste
For seasoning
ghee 2 tsp
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Cumin 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves 7-8
Preparation
Cook Ganike leaves in a pan adding little water.
Chop onion and fry the onion, garlic, red chilli, turmeric powder, copra in a pan with ghee.
Then grind all the fried ingredients and cooked leaves to make a fine paste.
Then again cook this ground mixture adding water so that it gets rasam consistency.
When this mixture boils add curd or buttermilk and salt to it.
Then season this rasam with mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves with ghee.
